Signs of Termites

Determining if you have a problem with termites can be somewhat challenging, since these destructive pests aren’t typically seen in the open. Termites are colony insects & the main species we manage in Victoria are subterranean, making it hard for the untrained eye to see them. They will generally prefer a dark, enclosed, and humid environment. As a result, they often aren’t detected in a structure until major damage is already done.

Termite protection or annual termite inspections, conducted by a fully accredited professional Termite Operator, are the main ways of protecting your home against termites. An expert termite inspection from Noah’s Ark Pest Control allows Melbourne residents to take action at the earliest signs of termite activity. Termite treatment and installing termite protection is essential in helping to preserve the integrity of a property.

Detecting Termite Damage Early

The main signs of the presence of termites involve damage to the structure of a home or building. This makes an annual comprehensive termite inspection crucial to monitoring for early signs of termite damage. It is worth noting that we see an even spread of termite attack across timber and brick homes, new and old, on stumps and on a concrete slab. Where termites are present environmentally their endless search for timber (termite food) will take them into houses regardless of structure, house type, or age. The good news is there are some basic things you can do to minimise termite attack.

As a warning to homeowners who may uncover signs of termite damage we would always advise to call an accredited termite operator for advice. Importantly, we always caution homeowners to avoid disturbing the area, as when uncovered, termite will retreat and move to a ‘New’ feeding site, potentially attacking other timbers in your home. The temptation to interfere with an affected area or spray with fly spray is the worst thing you could do. Good operators will be able to give you solid advice over the phone as to potential treatment costs.

We offer our customers a free ID service, where photos of the affected area, damaged timber or insects can be provided and we will have one of our termite experts review and provide advice. Upload your photo on the right.

Some of the warning signs of termites include:

Changes to doors and windows

One of the first signs of termite attack in timber is a swelling or softness to timber. As termites consume the timber in a structure, they leave mud-like excrement. This serves to protect termites from drying out and is designed to trap in moisture and heat. This often causes the wood to swell, making it harder to close doors and open windows.

Hollow or crinkling wood

Termites eat from the inside out and often stop at a piece of timber’s exterior. As a result, the wood becomes almost hollow and can make a crinkling or echoing sound when tapped.

Collapsing wood

Timber with extreme termite damage will actually cave in with minimal pressure when tapped or struck. Bumping against a door jam, a skirting board, or an architrave will damage wood that has been infested with and consumed by termites.

Visible “termite mud.”

Termites build a mud-like substance that protects termites from ‘drying out ‘ and allows them to breach or travel over non-timber material such as concrete, steel, paving etc. These mud or earth structures are called ‘workings’ and are often seen as evidence, to the expert eye, of where termites have entered property. It can be difficult to detect this substance since it is often under the house in the sub-floor or behind the plaster or gyprock; however, it can at times be seen over concrete stumps or bricks of the foundation.

The presence of any of these signs or symptoms indicates termites have entered property and damage is probably already being done. It is crucial to your home’s integrity to seek professional termite treatment services and termite control in Melbourne. If you see any of these signs of termites, call Noah’s Ark Pest Control as soon as possible to have this issue addressed.
